Innovative sulfur-resistant oxygen sensor assembly designed for enhanced durability in challenging environments. Utilizing advanced scrubber assemblies and 3D-printed adsorbent structures, this solution protects sensors from SO₂/SO₃ interference, increasing sensor lifespan.

Overview

The sulfur-resistant zirconia oxygen sensor assembly is an advanced solution designed to enhance the durability and accuracy of oxygen sensors in environments with high sulfur dioxide (SO₂) and sulfur trioxide (SO₃) concentrations. Developed by HiFunda LLC, this assembly integrates a large-capacity scrubber assembly with commercially-available O₂ sensors, specifically protecting them from sulfur-related interference. This innovation promises to extend the lifespan and reliability of oxygen sensors used in industrial settings like automotive and emissions monitoring.

Technical specifications

The sensor assembly utilizes a packed bed scrubber, which is initially evaluated with traditional SO₂/SO₃ adsorbents such as lime and limestone. The technology is then enhanced through the use of 3D-printed adsorbent structures, optimizing mass transfer and reducing pressure drop by up to 80%. Furthermore, the feasibility of plasma-spraying adsorbents onto high surface area metal foams is explored to improve efficiency. The assembly is tested with low-cost automotive wideband O₂ sensors and is compatible with the Emerson Rosemount Oxymitter 4000, ensuring wide applicability across various industries.

Technology readiness level

Currently, the technology readiness level is at 2, indicating that the concept has been formulated and the solution is in the early stages of development. Initial validation has been conducted using low-cost automotive sensors, with further testing planned to optimize and integrate the assembly with commercial O₂ sensors for real-world applications.

About HiFunda LLC

HiFunda LLC is a Utah-based technology incubator that specializes in developing advanced materials and electrochemical technologies for aerospace, defense, nuclear energy, and commercial applications. The company functions by identifying high-potential material science opportunities, performing rapid, focused R&D to reduce technical risk, and increasing the Technology Readiness Level (TRL) of these innovations. By leveraging a combination of internal research, product development, and external funding sources such as SBIR grants, HiFunda aims to move technologies from concept to commercial reality. When a technology demonstrates sufficient maturity, the company often works to launch or spawn product-oriented spin-off entities that are specifically structured to lead the commercialization of that technology in the marketplace.

This approach helps address critical technical hurdles in sectors requiring high-performance components, such as high-temperature electromagnets for electric propulsion systems. For instance, HiFunda has developed proprietary processes like filament winding in situ potting (FWISP) to improve the fabrication and reliability of electromagnetic coils. Through these efforts, the company serves as a partner to major industrial entities and government agencies, solving complex manufacturing and material challenges. By acting as an incubator, HiFunda fosters the growth of specialized technology businesses, managing the transition from early-stage R&D to viable commercial solutions that support infrastructure, energy, and defense needs.
