Innovative use of nutrient-modified aerogels allows for sustainable growth and harvesting of micro-algae, offering a cost-effective and efficient solution with minimal environmental impact, validated under laboratory conditions.

Overview

The sustainable harvesting of micro-algae using nutrient-modified aerogels is an innovative solution that addresses the challenge of separating micro-algae from open pond systems. By integrating micro-nutrients into silica aerogels, this technology promotes rapid and dense growth of micro-algae, which can be easily harvested without producing wastewater. This method not only simplifies the harvesting process but also ensures environmental sustainability by maintaining water quality.

Technical specifications
  • Aerogel composition: Silica aerogel beads modified with essential micro-nutrients
  • Growth conditions: Supports micro-algae growth under both natural and simulated sunlight
  • Harvesting process: Involves simple filtration to collect aerogel-micro-algae composites
  • Environmental benefit: No wastewater is produced during harvesting
  • Cost efficiency: Utilizes low-cost sodium silicate for aerogel production
Technology readiness level

This technology has reached Technology Readiness Level 4, having been successfully demonstrated in laboratory conditions. Further validation under natural conditions and scaling up are planned for enhanced applicability and industrial adoption.
