A dual-layer microencapsulation system improves creatine absorption and stability in food products. Utilizing creatine hydrochloride for solubility and alpha-lipoic acid for enhanced uptake, this system addresses bioavailability limitations and sensory challenges.
The sustained-release microencapsulated creatine hydrochloride (CHCl) and alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) system enhances creatine absorption and stability in food and beverage products. This innovative solution addresses the limitations of traditional creatine monohydrate, which suffers from low solubility and bioavailability. By using CHCl, which offers significantly higher solubility, and pairing it with ALA to stimulate uptake, the system overcomes transporter saturation issues and improves overall absorption rates by approximately 60%.
The system employs a dual-layer microencapsulation technology. The inner layer uses Zein as a moisture barrier to prevent the conversion of creatine into inactive creatinine, while the outer layer of Ethylcellulose provides sustained release and a smooth texture. This design not only enhances the bioavailability of creatine but also ensures a non-gritty mouthfeel, crucial for consumer acceptance in food and beverage applications.
Currently at Technology Readiness Level 3, the project is in the early stages of development. Plans for future validation include optimization of micronization and encapsulation, stability testing, and sensory evaluations. The goal is to achieve TRL 6 through pilot-scale demonstrations in relevant food environments.
