A novel sustained-release vaginal insert formulation utilizing postbiotics to combat recurrent vaginal yeast infections. The product aims to reduce antimicrobial resistance while providing soothing properties and synergistic effects with common antifungals.
The sustained-release postbiotic vaginal insert is designed to address recurrent vaginal yeast infections caused by Candida species. This innovative solution leverages the anti-Candida and anti-Candida biofilm properties of postbiotics derived from Lactobacillus spp. and Bacillus spp., known for their Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) status. By incorporating soothing prebiotics, the formulation aims to restore the natural vaginal microbiota balance, reduce itchiness, and enhance comfort. This product also offers a strategic advantage in reducing antimicrobial resistance by potentially working synergistically with established antifungal agents like clotrimazole and nystatin.
Currently at TRL 4, the technology has been validated in the lab for its anti-Candida activities. Further validation will involve testing the formulation's efficacy in combination with antifungals and evaluating its stability and release profile. A 1.5-year study is planned, followed by a year of feasibility and safety testing in animal models.
