Climate change, erratic rainfall patterns, and prolonged drought conditions continue to threaten agricultural productivity globally, with Sub-Saharan Africa being among the most vulnerable regions. Maize is widely cultivated cereal crop which suffers substantial yield losses annually due to water stress. To address this challenge, my research team and I initiated a research program focused on the identification of novel agonists of maize abscisic acid (ABA) receptors which are central regulators of plant drought-response mechanisms in the plant.

Using advanced computational chemistry approaches involving: We successfully identified two previously unreported ABA-derived molecules which was named as:-

  1. Sekonibactin
  2. Ayinlarine

These compounds demonstrated superior predicted receptor-binding characteristics relative to natural ABA and several known ABA agonists. This discovery positions the research team and funding bodies at the forefront of emerging research in plant receptor-targeted drought management technologies. Current Stage of the Breakthrough

The project has successfully completed: ✓ Target identification ✓ Computational screening ✓ Lead optimization ✓ Molecular docking studies ✓ Binding affinity assessment ✓ Agrochemical-likeness and synthetic accessibility evaluation ✓ Intellectual property assessment ✓ Preliminary patent drafting The project is presently at the critical translational stage requiring: • Chemical synthesis • Structural confirmation • Patent filing • Greenhouse validation • Technology commercialization preparation

Innovation and Commercial Potential Unlike conventional drought-management approaches, Sekonibactin and Ayinlarine are designed to act directly on ABA signalling pathways responsible for: • Stomatal regulation • Water-use efficiency • Drought adaptation • Stress-responsive gene activation If validated experimentally, these compounds could form the basis of: • Agricultural biostimulants • Drought-protection formulations • Seed-treatment technologies • Climate-smart crop management products

The compounds also possess strong intellectual-property potential because the exact structures have not been catalogued and is therefore a novel patentable chemical entities.

Commercial Value Roadmap The value of technology-based inventions increases significantly as development progresses. Development Stage Estimated Portfolio Value Current computational discovery $25,000 – $150,000 Patent filed and secured $100,000 – $500,000 Successful synthesis and characterization $250,000 – $1 million Greenhouse proof-of-concept $500,000 – $2 million Multi-location field validation $2 million – $10 million Licensing to agrochemical companies $5 million – $50 million+

Strategic Benefits to the Collaborator
