ThymoTropin™ is a patented, food-derived thymol/carvacrol bioactive that combines two complementary actions: reducing fat accumulation while supporting lean muscle. In oral high-fat-diet models, thymol and carvacrol reduced weight gain and visceral fat; in a 60-day human study, it lowered circulating myostatin by 36.2% and improved strength by 17.6%. The low-dose, water-soluble, heat-resistant powder format is suitable for wet food, kibble coatings, and treats. The canine application is at TRL 4 and protected by granted US, European, and Canadian patents.

Overview

ThymoTropin™ is a patented, food-derived bioactive based on thymol and carvacrol that combines two complementary actions for body composition management: reducing fat accumulation and supporting lean muscle. Originally evaluated in human health applications, the technology is being positioned for companion animal nutrition, particularly canine diets and supplements. Its dual mechanism targets adipose tissue formation and muscle-growth regulation, making it relevant for weight management and healthy aging in pets.

The ingredient addresses a growing need in pet nutrition for science-backed functional ingredients that can be incorporated without overhauling existing formulations. Its convenient powder format supports use in wet food, kibble coatings, and treats, providing a practical route to improved body condition and mobility.

Technical specifications

Mechanism of action:

  • Reduces fat accumulation through effects on adipogenesis, lipid oxidation, and thermogenesis
  • Activates TRPV3, a cell-signaling target involved in temperature-related biological pathways
  • Suppresses myostatin, a key inhibitor of muscle growth, thereby supporting lean-mass retention

Evidence base:

  • In oral high-fat-diet models, thymol and carvacrol reduced weight gain and visceral fat
  • In a 60-day human study (n=17), ThymoTropin™ reduced circulating myostatin by 36.2% and improved strength by 17.6%
  • Myostatin is conserved across species; a natural loss-of-function mutation in whippets increases muscularity and performance, supporting canine relevance

Formulation benefits:

  • Low-dose, water-soluble, heat-resistant powder
  • Suitable for wet food, dry-food coatings, and treats without complete diet reformulation
  • Protected by granted US, European, and Canadian patents

Development path:

  • Initial canine safety, dose-ranging, and palatability studies
  • Activity testing after 100–140°C processing and ambient storage
  • Controlled feeding study measuring weight, fat, lean mass, intake, and activity
  • Regulatory feasibility supported by existing US and EU recognition of thyme/oregano-derived flavoring substances in animal nutrition; dog-specific FDA-CVM and EU feed-additive assessments would address functional use and dose
Technology readiness level

The canine application is at technology readiness level (TRL) 4, meaning core components have been validated in laboratory or relevant environments and are ready for the next stage of applied development. The proposed program is stage-gated and flexible, allowing partners to select involvement level across ingredient supply, sponsored research, pilot or trial collaboration, co-development, and field- or territory-specific licensing. Under a nondisclosure agreement, the full clinical, preclinical, analytical, manufacturing, and IP evidence package is available to support joint decision-making on target population, product format, and dosing. Positive pilot results would support confirmatory testing, regulatory completion, and commercial scale-up.
