Exploring the role of toll-like receptors in mitochondrial dysfunction and neuroinflammation to identify new molecular targets for treating neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson's.
This research investigates the role of toll-like receptor (TLR) signaling pathways in mitochondrial dysfunction and neuroinflammation, particularly focusing on their impact on neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's Disease (PD). By studying the crosstalk between TLRs and mitochondria, this research aims to uncover new molecular targets for therapeutic intervention, potentially leading to novel treatments for neurodegenerative disorders.
The research is currently at Technology Readiness Level 3, indicating experimental proof of concept has been achieved through rigorous in vitro and in vivo studies. Further validation and development are planned to advance the research towards clinical application.
The University of Perugia is a comprehensive public research university serving the Umbria region through multiple campuses and a broad portfolio of academic and clinical programs. Companies connect through co-located laboratories and shared-use core facilities that provide testing and prototyping, alongside contract research and joint development pathways. Integration with the university hospital enables clinical translation, while internship and thesis-placement programs give firms access to talent year round. Research activity is supported by competitive European funding and national ministries, complemented by regional programs and industry-sponsored projects. A dedicated technology transfer office manages IP protection, licensing, spinouts, and collaboration agreements.
