We developed a manufacturing ready method to embed DataMatrix traceability codes directly into PCB panels using CNC drilling equipment, without any hardware modification. The process uses controlled micro drilling patterns to generate a machine readable 10×10, 12×12 or any DataMatrix code with high contrast and stable geometry. The method is compatible with standard FR 4, high TG materials, and HDI processes. Typical cycle time impact is under 0.8 seconds per code, and the code survives all downstream steps including desmear, metallization, lamination, and chemical processing.

The method is compatible with both CNC drilling machines and laser drilling systems, as long as they support Excellon-based coordinate formats.

Validation tests across 7 PCB factories show >99.5% readability after full production flow, including AOI, plating, etching, soldermask, and final routing. Codes remain readable even after dark soldermask application. The system integrates with existing MES/ERP systems and supports serialization, panel level tracking, and unit level traceability. Next steps include scaling to larger panel formats, optimizing code density for ultra thin materials, and expanding compatibility with additional CNC platforms. We are seeking partners to validate the technology in high volume environments and explore integration into P&G’s manufacturing traceability roadmap.
