Valorization route screening and prioritization for pectin production side streams

Consulting service
Company

A four-week systematic screening study that evaluates 30-40 valorization routes for pectin production side streams such as spent peel and pomace. Routes are screened against client-defined constraints including technology readiness levels 5-9, minimal capital expenditure, low energy and chemical intensity, and clear business case viability. The service delivers a ranked, defensible shortlist of 8-10 pathways plus a complete database of all routes considered.

Overview

Bright Green Partners offers a four-week systematic screening study to prioritize valorization routes for pectin production side streams, including spent peel and pomace. Rather than committing to a single technology pathway prematurely, this service evaluates the full landscape of 30-40 potential valorization routes spanning biological, extraction, fiber, thermal, and agricultural pathways. The goal is to identify which routes genuinely fit the producer's real-world constraints — technology readiness level 5-9, minimal capital expenditure and complexity, low energy and chemical intensity, and a credible business case — before further investment is made.

Technical specifications

The study proceeds in two sequential phases:

  • Phase 1 – Pathway screening (2 weeks): Builds a long list of 30-40 valorization routes from analogous acidic, wet biomass streams; benchmarks up to four comparable streams to understand what has worked and why; and screens the list against hard gates including TRL 5-9, capex, energy and chemical intensity, pH and nitrate tolerance, dewatering, transport radius, and regulatory considerations. This narrows the field to 8-10 surviving pathways.

  • Phase 2 – Value assessment (2 weeks): Scores the surviving pathways on value pool, processing cost, scalability, and fit with existing markets. The top 2-3 pathways receive a deep-dive covering economics, regulatory path, and required capabilities, concluding with a build, partner, or license recommendation for each, plus a partner shortlist and a defined Stage 2 pilot candidate.

Deliverables: A ranked, defensible shortlist and a full database of every route considered, with assessment criteria. A 2-5 day ramp-up aligns assessment criteria with the client's team and consolidates existing stream and cost data.

Technology readiness level

As a consulting engagement, the screening methodology itself is established and mature, and is adapted to the client's specific constraints and data. The valorization routes evaluated span technology readiness levels 5-9, and the final recommendation identifies which pathways are ready for pilot and scale-up under the client's conditions.
