A patented, PEG-free SMEDDS platform that enhances the solubility, absorption, and bioavailability of micronutrients. This adaptable system is compatible with various supplement formats and has shown efficacy in preclinical studies, with a TRL of 7.

Overview

The versatile PEG-free Self-Microemulsifying Delivery System (SMEDDS) platform enhances solubility, absorption, and bioavailability of challenging micronutrients. Upon contact with water, it forms stable microemulsions that maintain active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) in a solubilized state, protect them from degradation, and enhance intestinal uptake, including via the lymphatic route. This system employs biocompatible, food-grade excipients, ensuring safety and scalability for various vitamin, mineral, and supplement (VMS) formats.

Technical specifications
  • PEG-free formulation: Utilizes food-grade, biocompatible excipients.
  • High bioavailability: Proven to significantly improve absorption compared to conventional delivery methods.
  • Versatile format compatibility: Can be formulated as water-free concentrates for softgels or gummies, diluted microemulsions for drops or shots, or as powder for tablets or capsules.
  • Stability and protection: Provides robust physical stability and protects APIs from low pH, hydrolysis, and enzymatic degradation.
  • Tailored amphiphilic excipients: Enhance membrane fluidity and epithelial permeability.
Technology readiness level

The SMEDDS platform is at TRL 7, having demonstrated safety and efficacy in in vitro, in situ, and animal studies. Further optimization and validation for specific nutrients are ongoing, with future plans including extensive stability and pharmacokinetic evaluations in preclinical models.

About Micellae Delivery Systems Inc.

Micellae Delivery Systems Inc. is a technology-based company that specializes in advanced drug delivery systems designed to improve the solubility and bioavailability of hydrophobic bioactive compounds. Founded as a spinout from the University of Toronto based on 15 years of research, the company developed O2W, a proprietary Self-Microemulsifying Drug Delivery System (SMEDDS). This technology is designed to be free of Polyethylene Glycols (PEGs) and uses food-grade excipients to enhance the performance, onset speed, and safety of formulations. Their platform is adaptable for various dosage forms, including concentrates, powders, and gels, providing a tunable-release profile for high-potency products.

The company primarily serves pharmaceutical, medical, and recreational cannabis producers, helping them create safer, more sustainable, and high-performing products. By solving the challenge of low oral bioavailability in cannabinoids—which typically suffer from poor absorption in the gastrointestinal tract—Micellae’s technology aims to deliver therapeutic effects more efficiently to consumers and patients. The firm actively engages with industry partners to integrate O2W into existing or new product lines, supported by a foundation of academic research, granted patents, and peer-reviewed scientific publications that validate their formulation expertise.
