Innovative process for synthesizing water-stable polyesters using lignin reagents and green solvents. This dual curing approach aims to enhance sustainability and efficiency by reducing time and temperature requirements in polyester production.

Overview

The proposed solution is a novel process for synthesizing water-stable polyesters incorporating lignin reagents and utilizing a dual curing method. This approach leverages a sustainable organic catalyst combined with volatile green solvents to enhance the production process's sustainability. The method significantly reduces the time and temperature typically required for polyester synthesis, promoting a greener, more efficient manufacturing process. The use of lignin, a natural polymer from woody biomass, aligns with the increasing demand for sustainable materials in industry.

Technical specifications
  • Organic Catalyst Functionality: The catalyst plays a dual role in lignin functionalization and subsequent curing with epoxides, operating effectively at temperatures of 60°C for lignin functionalization and 110-130°C for curing.
  • Green Solvents: Utilizes volatile, environmentally friendly solvents at each stage of the process.
  • Dual Curing Approach: Designed to adapt to various target products, allowing for a customizable and flexible production process.
  • Polyester Compatibility: Functionalized lignin is made compatible with polyesters, expanding the potential applications of the resulting materials.
Technology readiness level

This technology is currently at TRL 4, indicating that it has been validated in a laboratory environment. Ongoing validation includes optimizing reaction conditions and studying thermomechanical properties to meet specific industry requirements. The process is designed to eventually deliver a target amount of the final product for industry application, with further developments planned for compatibility with other polymeric systems.
