A novel wearable platform using PEDOT carbon cloth for targeted nerve pain relief through neuromodulation and localized drug delivery. It combines electrical stimulation, biosignal monitoring, and drug release in a flexible, scalable design.
The wearable bioelectronic platform is designed for non-invasive nerve pain management through a combination of electrical neuromodulation and localized drug delivery. Utilizing PEDOT carbon cloth, this innovative solution offers targeted relief from neuropathic pain by addressing both abnormal nerve signaling and local inflammation. The platform is breathable, flexible, and provides a low-impedance interface for effective peripheral nerve stimulation, reducing pain sensations like burning, tingling, and shooting pain. Additionally, it incorporates a drug delivery system for localized anti-inflammatory treatment with dexamethasone, minimizing systemic exposure and enhancing patient comfort and safety.
Key features:
The platform combines the benefits of neuromodulation and localized drug delivery in a single device, ensuring that patients receive comprehensive pain management without invasive procedures.
This bioelectronic platform has reached a Technology Readiness Level of 5, indicating that it has been validated in laboratory environments. Future development plans include industry partnerships for scale-up, electrochemical optimization, and validation in both in vitro and in vivo settings.
UPEI is a comprehensive public university in Charlottetown with an applied, partnership‑oriented research culture. Companies engage through a 78,000‑sq‑ft engineering facility built for co‑creation and a client‑focused design‑clinic model, and through the veterinary teaching hospital’s services. The campus links to the provincial health system, including an on‑campus patient medical home and a new Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences Centre for interprofessional training and clinical translation. Research is backed by federal funding from NSERC, CIHR, SSHRC, and the Canada Foundation for Innovation, with regional support from the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency. Research Partnerships and Innovation manages IP, licensing, industry contracts, and startup pathways, and connects partners to Charlottetown’s bioscience park.
