This research explores the genetic modulation of wheat cuticle chemistry to optimize fungicide transport, improving agrochemical retention and bioavailability. By understanding cuticle composition and structure, the study aims to enhance fungicide efficacy while reducing environmental impact.

Overview

This research investigates the genetic modulation of wheat cuticle chemistry and its influence on fungicide dynamics. By altering the composition and structure of the cuticle, particularly the wax and cutin components, the study aims to optimize the transport of fungicides, thereby enhancing their retention on leaves and bioavailability. This approach not only improves the efficacy of fungicides but also minimizes their environmental loss, contributing to more sustainable agricultural practices.

Technical specifications

The research focuses on creating wheat mutants with varied wax and cutin profiles through BSMV-mediated gene silencing. Key parameters such as the cuticle-water partitioning coefficient (logKcw) and diffusivity (Dcut) are measured to assess fungicide transport. The study employs advanced techniques like GC-MS for chemical composition analysis, XRD for crystal structure examination, and LC-MS for fungicide partitioning. Cuticle ultrastructure is analyzed using SEM and TEM, with hydrophobicity evaluated through contact angle measurements. These assessments will help establish a cuticle reservoir model to inform fungicide formulation design.

Technology readiness level

Currently at TRL 4, this research is in the experimental validation phase, utilizing laboratory studies to explore the relationship between cuticle composition and fungicide dynamics. The study aims to complete within one year, providing valuable insights for the rational design of fungicide formulations in the future.
