Former New Zealand Crown innovation agency based in Lower Hutt, with shared laboratories, pilot-scale facilities, the Gracefield Innovation Quarter, measurement infrastructure, and business-facing R&D support. Its capabilities are being transferred to MBIE and new public research organisations.
Callaghan Innovation was New Zealand’s national Crown innovation agency, created to help businesses use research, development, and technology for commercial growth; it was not a university. Its Lower Hutt base included the Gracefield Innovation Quarter, a multi-tenant science and technology campus with laboratory, workshop, and office space, plus nationally relevant measurement and applied R&D capabilities. The agency connected companies to technical expertise, shared facilities, funding pathways, startup support, and research-to-industry networks across Aotearoa New Zealand. It was funded primarily through New Zealand Government appropriations, with MBIE assuming several functions. Callaghan Innovation is being disestablished from July 1, 2026, subject to legislation, with remaining services and assets transferring to MBIE and new public research organisations.
