James Hutton Institute

The James Hutton Institute is an independent Scottish research institute with major sites in Aberdeen and Invergowrie, bringing together land, crop and environmental science at scale. Industry connects through co‑located innovation centres—the International Barley Hub and Advanced Plant Growth Centre—plus rentable labs and glasshouses and open soil and land data via the National Soils Archive. Research farms at Glensaugh and Balruddery act as whole‑farm and field‑scale testbeds that link laboratory advances to real‑world deployment. Core funding comes from the Scottish Government’s Rural and Environment Science and Analytical Services (RESAS) programme, alongside competitive awards from UK Research and Innovation. A commercial arm provides accredited analytical testing, contract R&D and consultancy to accelerate translation with partners.
