KALRO is a statutory national public research organization headquartered in Nairobi, with a distributed operating footprint and a mandate focused on practical agricultural transformation. Its 16 semi-autonomous institutes and research centers provide laboratories, field sites, genetic-resource collections, and testing and analytical services across Kenya. KALRO’s demand-driven model connects it with national and county governments, farmers, producer organizations, universities, development partners, and private-sector actors to adapt technologies and move them toward use through outreach, advisory services, and product channels. Research is supported mainly by the Government of Kenya, with additional funding from the World Bank, European Union, FAO, and other international partners. Licensing, partnerships, seed outlets, and fee-based services support technology transfer and commercialization.
