UL Research Institutes

UL Research Institutes is an independent nonprofit research organization with global reach, headquartered in Evanston, Illinois, and operating a distributed network of specialized research sites. It combines high-tech experimental laboratories, full-scale and field-testing capabilities, open-science practices, and a long history of producing safety knowledge for public use. Industry engagement is structured through research partnerships, expert convenings, and collaboration with academic, government, and private-sector organizations, supported by connections to UL Solutions and UL Standards & Engagement. Funding includes UL enterprise support, competitive ULRI grants, and selected federal awards, including U.S. Department of Energy ARPA-E support.
