UMBC is a comprehensive public research university (Carnegie R1) in the Baltimore–Washington corridor, enrolling more than 13,000 students. Industry partners work with faculty and students through bwtech@UMBC, the adjacent research and technology park offering incubators and direct access to campus talent. The Career Center runs a formal co-op program that builds pipelines into regional employers, while UMBC’s proximity to NSA at Fort Meade, NIST, and NASA Goddard supports collaboration with federal labs and contractors. Research is supported by competitive federal funding, with major awards from NASA and strong support from NSF, NIH, and the Department of Defense. The Office of Technology Development manages IP, licensing, and startup formation.
