Frequently asked questions
What is Halo?
Halo is where corporate R&D teams partner with academic researchers and startups to discover novel technologies, improve products, test and validate, fill knowledge gaps, and partner on federal funding opportunities.
Who from UIC is already on Halo?
Browse the Innovators tab on UIC’s Halo page to see which faculty have already claimed their profiles.
Where did my profile come from?
We built a preliminary profile using publications on OpenAlex. No private or paywalled information is used. Claiming it lets you correct anything and decide what's shown.
Some profiles already have publications. Why isn't my unclaimed profile prepopulated?
We use OpenAlex publication data to seed unclaimed profiles, with publications and an about statement. If your publications are not captured on OpenAlex or our system wasn't able to pull the data, your prepopulated profile may only contain your name to begin.
Do I need to add all of my publications?
No. Add the 10 to 15 publications that best show where you specialize, weighted towards what you are working on now. Adding more does not make you rank higher in search, and companies looking at your profile will not read a full catalogue.
How does Halo match me to opportunities?
Opportunities are matched to the expertise listed on your profile, not to the length of your publication list. Publications help companies judge fit once they have found you, but the number of them does not affect your ranking in search either. The two things that matter most are adding listings, the technologies, facilities and services you want industry to find, and choosing expertise terms from our list, which is built around what industry asks for.
My area of expertise isn't in the list. What should I do?
Email support@halo.science with the term you’re looking for and we’ll add it.
How does claiming my profile help me?
A claimed profile gets surfaced to R&D teams actively looking for your expertise — which can lead to sponsored research, industry partnerships, consulting, and licensing opportunities you wouldn't otherwise hear about.
What is a company looking for when they land on my profile?
R&D teams come to Halo with a specific problem and a budget. They want to see where you specialize, what you are working on now, and whether you could do the work. Think of this as an industry-facing bio, not a replica of your CV.
How long does it take?
A couple of minutes. Your profile is already pre-filled, so claiming is mostly reviewing and confirming what's there.
Does it cost anything?
No. Claiming your profile and keeping it up to date is completely free for faculty.
What do I control once I claim it?
Everything that you see on the profile. You can edit your publications, funding, grants, and about statement.
How do I control the emails I get from Halo?
You choose what you receive. Notification settings are in your account and can be changed at any time, and every Halo email has an unsubscribe link. If you’d rather we set it for you, email support@halo.science.
What if I don't want to be on Halo at all?
Just contact us and we'll remove you from our database.
