Our lab would like to work with industry partners to develop effective vehicle-based mitigation methods to reduce collisions with animals. Such methods would have enormous benefits for drivers, the transportation industry, and animal communities.
About
Animal-vehicle collisions are ubiquitous across the developed world. Such collisions cause billions of animal deaths each year and pose substantial safety threats and economic costs to people. Research on animal-vehicle collisions in the DeVault Wildlife Lab is focused on learning why AVCs occur by investigating what goes wrong from the animal’s perspective when they are struck by vehicles. Lab members then apply that knowledge to the development of mitigation measures designed to reduce collisions. Recent research includes 1. Development and testing of vehicle-lighting technology to elicit movements by deer and wild pigs away from roads, and 2. Development of new birdstrike risk models that allow for airport managers to prioritize wildlife management efforts.
