Pest and disease management covers keeping a crop from being eaten or infected, and knowing when it is. On Halo, the solutions cover microbial biocontrol of disease and insect pests, fungicides and formulated crop treatments, weed control and herbicide delivery, and detecting disease and pests in the field. Plant disease management expertsBiological control is the largest cluster on Halo, and almost all of it names the organism it targets. Conventional fungicide chemistry sits alongside it, weed control turns out to be mostly a delivery problem, and a separate set of entries does nothing but detect. On Halo it spans six groups, including microbial biocontrol of disease and insect pests, fungicides and formulated crop treatments, and weed control and herbicide delivery.
Stage of development. Work on pest and disease management on Halo comes mostly from companies. 66% are past proof of concept (TRL 4 or higher). Co-development and sponsored research are the usual partnering routes, and about 55% of the solutions that state terms offer licensing.
Biologicals that name their target. The microbial entries do not offer general plant health. A Bacillus velezensis strain is offered against two Fusarium species and again against soybean sudden death, a two-species consortium against rice blast, and bacteria isolated from entomopathogenic nematodes against medfly and olive fruit fly. Registration and field validation are claimed, not promised.
Detection moved out to the plot. Five entries only measure. A CRISPR assay returns a pathogen result in 30 minutes at the field edge, a lateral flow strip finds fungal contamination in grain before mycotoxin forms, and seismic sensors pick up red palm weevil larvae inside a trunk. Catching the problem early is worth more than treating it well.
Herbicide work is delivery and dose. Of six weed control entries, five change how a herbicide is carried or where it lands. Lignin nanocarriers add UV protection, polylactic acid slows atrazine down, charcoal banded in the row protects a seed crop, and drone guidance takes a fifth off the volume. Only one goes looking for a new molecule.
Pest and disease management covers keeping a crop from being eaten or infected, and knowing when it is. It spans microbial biocontrol, fungicide chemistry and formulated treatments, weed control and the delivery systems built around a herbicide, field diagnostics for pathogens and insects, and the resistance bred into the plant. Growers, crop protection companies and agronomy services are the buyers.
