Kimberly Clark Professional (KCP) is a global leader in essential B2B products, dedicated to improving the lives of people around the world. Through customer-focused product expertise, trusted brands, and a commitment to sustainability, KCP brings to market innovative solutions to help facility managers and janitorial service professionals maintain hygienic and efficient restrooms.
Despite advances in dispenser technology, interruptions in product availability still occur when a consumable unit (such as a roll or stack of paper towels or restroom paper products) is depleted before replacement. Current dispensers often require manual intervention or plug-in power sources that add complexity, cost, or energy requirements.
The Kimberly Clark Professional Restroom team is seeking solutions that automate the transition from one consumable unit to the next, ensuring a continuous supply of product is on hand at every moment of need.
What we're looking for
We are looking for reliable mechanisms that can automatically switch from one restroom paper consumable unit to the next when the first unit is depleted. The ideal solution should function even when the consumable units are loaded separately and not physically joined, ensuring a continuous supply of product without reliance on wall power, complex sensors, or significant user action. Units could be stacks of sheets or rolled goods.
Early-stage and conceptual proposals are welcome, provided they outline how the approach could ultimately meet the performance objectives listed below.
Our must-have requirements are:
Switches from the first consumable unit to the next with minimal or no human intervention
Locates the leading edge of a refill unit and feeds it to ensure continuous product availability
Minimizes complexity and enables low- or no-power operation (battery-powered or mechanically operated)
Functions within small implementation spaces (approximately 18”Hx12”Wx10”D to 36”Hx24”Wx20”D)
Our nice-to-have's are:
Incorporates multiple reserve units (i.e. second unit, third unit, fourth unit)
$150,000 - $300,000 over 1 to 2 years for advancement of TLR, along with possible license of the researcher's patented materials.
Expertise
Partners will have the opportunity to connect with our in-house experts in skin science, materials development, formulation and application, product safety, and clinical evaluation to help guide and validate solutions.
Tools and Technologies
Capability to rapidly prototype and test potential solutions for rapid proof of concept and efficacy.
Who we are
Our passion for creating essentials for a better life for people everywhere has driven us to invent five of our eight major consumer product categories: facial tissue, paper towels, toilet paper on a roll, feminine pads and disposable training pants.
At Kimberly-Clark, the insights gained from our customers, shoppers and users drive us to continuously explore new ways to create innovative product and design solutions across our brands and increase our speed to market with new-to-the-world essential solutions.
Hi Jeremiah - we would be open to both options. I don't see a way to add a comment to Joe's answer on your other question, but we are open to both partnership models you mention in your question. Thank you for your patience as I was out on holiday!
Is it your intention to dispense a fixed amount of product for each use? In other words, is there a metering mechanism (e.g. exit roller with cutter) that would need to be incorporated into the design?
Hi Matt - we are interested in both types of solutions - both those with a "metering system" and those without a fixed product amount dispensed. Thank you for your patience as I was out on holiday!
Do you put a higher internal ranking value on the father along the TRL level of the product suggestion? (eg. preferred to have something integrated rather than created)
Would a modelling-driven, low-power mechanical concept (TRL 1–3), focused on passive switching mechanisms and materials optimisation, be considered responsive to this request?
In regard to the requirement that the leading edge of the consumable be "located", does that need to be part of the mechanism or can it be required that the maintainer place the leading edge in a specific location?
Hi Edward - we would like the solution to be able to locate and feed the leading edge without requiring intervention from the maintainer/servicer. For example, rolls are loaded into the dispenser as-is (i.e. leading edge with glue strip intact) and the solution will automatically find and feed the edge of the reserve roll.
Hi Jeremiah, thanks for your question. I just wanted to let you know that the answer to your question may be delayed until after the holidays because the Request owner is out of the office. Thanks a lot for your patience and happy holidays!

Q.
Is it acceptable that there be different solutions for roll towel, folded towel and bath tissue?
