Background

Procter & Gamble is leading innovation in consumer packaged good that deliver irresistible superior, sustainable product and package experiences.

Consumers, retailers, and therefore Procter & Gamble are developing fiber-based packaging solutions (pulp, cardboard). Many existing fiber-based packaging solutions are designed for Food & Beverage and do not meet the need of product protection and shelf life (18 months) of liquid detergents i.e. products that contain aqueous solutions with surfactants, enzymes and solvents.

What we're looking for

We are looking to identify inner barrier solutions for fiber-based packages that enable sufficient product protection and shelf life for liquid detergents but remain fully recyclable in the existing paper/cardboard streams.

Our must-have requirements are:
  • MVTR <0.5 g/m2/day (ASTM F1249, ISO 2528) and an OTR <1 ml/m2/day (ASTM D3985), both @25dC/60RH.
  • Barrier solution can be applied to flat board and hollow containers without pin-holes (EN13676:2001).
  • Data (lab or paper exercise) indicating the barrier solution is compatible with the Paper Recycling streams in Europe
  • Barrier is compatible with liquid laundry detergent including surfactants, enzymes, and solvent
Our nice-to-have's are:
  • Proof of principal for the product-package compatibility - place commercially available laundry detergent in contact with barrier solution for 1 wk at 40C/75 RH to ensure no degradation).

  • A cost estimation of barrier including application for a 0.5 – 2L hollow container.

  • Data showing barrier integrity in package drop test from 1.2m (0 ppm; ASTM D2463A)

  • Data confirming the recyclability of a packaging sample with the barrier solution, according to PTS-RH:021/97 Test or International equivalent tests

What's out of scope:
  • Proposals to replace liquid detergents by another product form.
  • Aseptic liquid packaging board (We are not interested because the Aluminum foil hinders effective recycling.)
  • Fresh liquid packaging board (LPB) with EVOH-PE barrier (We are not interested because it fails the barrier requirements.)
  • Metalized paper (fails product-pack compatibility)
Acceptable technology readiness levels (TRL):
Levels 3-9
