Background

Procter & Gamble, a leader in consumer goods, has identified a significant consumer pain point in the realm of bug prevention. Over 60% of consumers resort to additional spraying of kill sprays after eliminating bugs, hoping to prevent future infestations. However, many express dissatisfaction with these products due to unpleasant odors, safety concerns, and inconsistent performance. A common issue with existing kill sprays is that they often promise a repellent benefit behind a residual kill mechanism, which fails to meet consumer expectations.

Moreover, pest control products that claim to create a barrier against bugs often require frequent application, particularly in outdoor settings, to maintain effectiveness. This frequent reapplication has been identified as a significant barrier to consumer trial and habit adoption.

From a technical perspective, the challenge lies in developing a solution that provides long-lasting bug prevention through the controlled release of active compounds. This solution must be natural, safe, and effective, specifically designed for outdoor applications in areas closely connected to the home environment, such as patios, gardens, and recreational spaces. While the primary goal is to prevent bugs from entering indoor spaces by applying effective solutions to outdoor areas, we are also interested in innovative solutions that can enhance the safety, comfort, and enjoyment of outdoor spaces.

What we're looking for

We are looking for innovative solutions that can be applied outdoors to prevent bugs from approaching treated areas or individuals. The solution should offer long-lasting protection while ensuring safety for people, pets, and the environment.

Solutions of interest include:
  • Novel slow-release formulations for outdoor surfaces that remain effective for extended periods, delivering continuous bug protection without frequent reapplication.
  • Barrier protection treatments that prevent bugs from entering outdoor areas, creating a protective shield around spaces like patios and gardens.
  • Novel natural, plant-based insect repellent ingredients.
  • New forms of applications for outdoor use, such as tapes, gels, granules, chalk, and coatings.
  • Personal portable devices used to protect individuals while they are in outdoor spaces (e.g. bracelets, stickers, etc.).
  • Solutions that combine bug prevention with other outdoor care benefits, such as varnishes that protect wood while repelling insects or cleaning products that also act as insect repellents.
  • Automated systems that simplify the uniform application of bug repellents across large outdoor areas (e.g. diffusers or garden stakes emitting safe, insect-repelling vapors).
  • Packaging solutions and devices that allow easy refilling of bug prevention products and provide automated functionality to reduce the need for frequent reapplication.
  • Bug-repellent treatments for fabrics used in outdoor products like chair pads and patio umbrellas.
  • Landscaping materials, such as treated mulch, that can be integrated into the landscape to repel insects.
Our must-have requirements are:
  • Formulations and new active compounds must be safe for people, pets, and the environment.
  • Formulations and new active compounds must demonstrate effectiveness against a wide variety of common outdoor insects.
  • Formulations must be specifically designed to provide long-lasting bug prevention in outdoor environments while also being able to break down naturally over time (biodegradable).
Our nice-to-have's are:
  • Automated devices designed to withstand outdoor conditions (weather resistant), ensuring the product remains effective and easy to use even after being stored outside.
  • Dual-functionality with other outdoor care benefits.
  • Compatibility with existing outdoor systems, such as hose or drip irrigation systems, and landscaping materials like mulch or wood chips.
What's out of scope:
  • Bug zappers or insect traps that rely on UV light attraction.
  • Common solutions already on the market for bug prevention and control.
