Background

Kimberly‑Clark is a global leader in essential consumer products, committed to improving the lives of people around the world while reducing our environmental footprint. Sustainability is at the core of our strategy, and we have set ambitious goals to address climate, forests, water, and plastics. A key part of this commitment is to reduce our plastic footprint by advancing systems that keep valuable resources in use and out of the environment, focusing on scalable, practical solutions that deliver both environmental and business value.

One major challenge lies in the disposal of personal hygiene products such as diapers, wipes, feminine hygiene, and incontinence products. These items are currently handled in vastly different ways depending on geography, mostly ending up in landfills or incineration, and in some cases leaked into the environment, but rarely directed to circular systems. These disposal outcomes can result in undesired environmental and social impacts while missing opportunities to recover resources.

We aspire to transform the disposal of personal hygiene products into circular systems that are safe, efficient, and economically viable. By doing so, we hope to create new pathways for responsible consumption and disposal, contributing to our broader sustainability goals while reshaping the future of personal hygiene waste management.

What we're looking for

We are looking for technologies, strategies, and partners who can help us transform the disposal of personal hygiene products such as diapers, wipes, feminine hygiene and incontinence products from linear to circular systems. The current focus is on creating collection systems for used absorbent hygiene products. Our goal is to identify partners for pilots and trials that demonstrate real-world feasibility and create pathways for commercial scale-up.

While North America is a priority, we will consider global markets including Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia, Brazil, South Korea, China, India, Italy, and Vietnam. We also welcome collaboration with partners working regionally, with the openness to help promising models expand their footprint into new markets if they demonstrate strong potential.

We recognize that no single solution will solve this challenge end-to-end. Therefore, we are open to contributions across the value chain, whether in container design, localized collection, transportation, or other system components. We are also open to solutions developed for other waste streams that involve comparable handling, odor, or regulatory challenges (e.g., food or organic waste, pet waste, healthcare, hazardous, or regulated waste) that could be adapted for absorbent hygiene products.

Solutions of interest include:
  • Solutions targeted to consumers (e.g., direct-to-consumer or business-to-consumer) for pick-up or drop-off collection of used hygiene products
  • B2B collection for institutions or businesses (e.g., multi-unit residential buildings, hospitals, early childhood care & education facilities, schools, and elder care & long-term care facilities)
  • Consumer-facing business models that are easy to adopt and promote behavior change
  • Design of safe and hygienic collection bins/approaches for in-home storage until disposal
  • Design of safe and hygienic collection bins/approaches for B2B facilities until pickup
  • Regional reverse-logistics approaches that could integrate with existing municipal or private waste infrastructure
Our must-have requirements are:
  • Ability to integrate with existing or realistically expandable waste treatment infrastructure
  • Pilot design must identify measurable outcomes
  • Shows feasibility with hygienic waste or presents a clear plan to adapt solutions/collection models from other waste streams, addressing odor, safety, and regulatory challenges
  • Provides available data or a clear plan to generate verifiable data for validation and life-cycle assessment
Our nice-to-have's are:
  • Clear commercialization pathway beyond pilot stage
  • Lower system-level cost compared to current disposal routes
  • Automation integrated into collection processes
  • Modular, scalable designs adaptable to multiple geographies
What's out of scope:
  • Development or redesign of absorbent hygiene products

We have expertise in the collection of absorbent hygiene products from trials undertaken for West Sussex County Council from house holds within their geographical areas would this be of interest to you

A.
Hi Andy, depends if that model has potential to be replicable outside of that specific area. Also, our presence is not particularly large in the UK as a whole, so that would present addtional challenges to move forward.
