Background

We are committed to delivering the most comfortable single-use absorbent hygiene products in terms of softness, skin health, and auditory discretion. Outercover materials play an important role in product performance by serving as a fluid barrier that helps prevent leakage and visible staining. At the same time, they influence key user-experience attributes, including leakage protection, softness, drapability, breathability, thermal comfort, skin health, and noise generation. 

 

One pathway to improving comfort and auditory discretion is to eliminate the film layer commonly used in current outercover laminates. However, doing so while maintaining barrier performance and preventing stain visibility remains technically challenging. Prior efforts to create filmless outercovers have required changes to the fabric structure to meet barrier properties that introduced unacceptable stiffness, rigidity, and loss of comfort in use. 

 

Recent advances in nonwoven material design, fiber and web architecture, and chemical treatments, including surface modification and bonding technologies, create new opportunities to achieve functional requirements for film-free outercovers. Advancing these materials to achieve performance comparable to film-containing laminates would enable diapers and other hygiene absorbent products that are comfortable, durable, discrete, and supportive of improved skin health.

What we're looking for

We are looking for film-free outercover materials that deliver parity-or-better softness, skin health and quiet consumer experience while maintaining core product attributes, including fluid barrier performance and stain masking. The goal is to enable soft, noise-discreet, and breathable outercover materials at a lower cost than current film-based laminate outercovers without compromising protection or visual cleanliness.

We are interested in a wide variety of potential materials, including but not limited to the following:

Solutions of interest include:
  • Synthetic nonwoven materials (spunbond, spunlace, carded webs, SMS composites, laminates)
  • Nonwoven materials and fabrics made of natural fibers
  • Nonwoven fabrics with a combination of synthetic and natural fibers
  • Multilayered laminates of nonwoven materials
  • Nonwoven materials treated with chemicals (surface or bulk)
  • Woven materials
Our must-have requirements are:
  • Cost < $80/thousand square yards
  • Basis weight <60 g per square meter
  • Barrier properties — no strikethrough for urine, running bowel movement (BM), and menses under hydrohead pressure ≈ 62 millibar; no obvious see-through for urine, BM, and menses
  • Breathability — WVTR: > 2000g/m2/24hours | Air permeability: >5 ft3/ft2/min
  • Tactile properties — Softness: cup crush value < 50 g | Drapable and flexible | Low noise
  • Good tensile strength — Tensile peak load (MD/CD): >2000 gf/3 in | Elongation at break (MD): >5%

Funding is available to support pilot line trials. Level of funding will depend on the proposal scope with typical ranges of $100,000 - $200,000 to advance TRL to level 7 or higher and potential for expanded funding based on outcomes.

Compensation may be provided through alternative models, such as purchase agreements to accelerate commercialization, licensing agreements for promising technologies, or equity investment in high-potential ventures, depending on the maturity and applicability of the solution.

Partners will have the opportunity to collaborate with our in-house experts, internal R&D, and marketing team. The technical team includes experts in polymer science, base sheet process, and converting process technologists, as well as performance evaluation.

Pilot equipment to evaluate extrusion, web forming, treatment and converting.

We can provide microscopy, analytical services, or testing relative to key material property goals.
