one • fıve is a biomaterials research, development and scale-up company, providing faster, affordable, tailored solutions with measurable environmental impact. 

 

As part of our recent developments for several customers we are looking to replace conventional heat sealant layers with renewable materials such as natural polymers. 

 

This call for proposal addresses the challenge of developing sustainable packaging solutions, specifically focusing on the intricate task of achieving heat-sealable paper coated with natural polymer, aiming for a heat seal strength of ≥3 N/15mm. 

 

The difficulty lies in the inherent complexities associated with obtaining natural polymers that meet the demanding heat seal strength requirements. This endeavor necessitates a deep understanding of natural polymers, paper, and material science, requiring expertise in extrusion coating, biopolymer extrusion, and sustainability assessments.  

 

The proposal must navigate the fine balance between processing parameters, ensuring that the extrusion coating on paper not only achieves the desired heat seal strength but also maintains crucial characteristics such as melt flow rate and adhesion to paper.  

 

The call recognizes the challenges inherent in working with natural polymers and underscores the need for innovation to overcome these hurdles. It seeks groundbreaking scalable solutions, emphasizing the significance of sustainable alternatives in the face of the packaging industry's evolving demands.

What we're looking for

We are looking for a natural polymer-based solution that will undergo processing via extrusion coating on paper, ensuring a balance between heat seal strength, melt flow rate, and adhesion to paper. In order of priority, we care most about: 1) heat sealable, 2) good adhesion, 3) extrusion coating

Our must-have requirements are:
  • Sustainable polymers with good heat seal strength (≥3 N/ 15mm)
  • Good adhesion to paper / tie layer / primer
  • Water insoluble / withstands contact with liquid
  • 100% biobased carbon and / or biodegradable (soil, marine, home compostable & industrially compostable)
Our nice-to-have's are:
  • Paper recycling: repulping yield >80% Visual impurities ≤ level 2 (minor impurities) (cf. CEPI)
  • Feedstock: industrial or other waste streams, non-GMO organisms
  • Naturally occurring macromolecules, e.g. polysaccharides, proteins, polyhydroxyalkanoates
What's out of scope:
  • Bio-PE Bio-PP
  • Microalgae/cyanobacteria based polymers (e.g. PHB produced in cyanobacteria)
  • Macroalgae based polymers
Acceptable technology readiness levels (TRL):
Levels 5-9
