Background

Rodent pressures from mice and rats present significant risks across residential living spaces, storage areas, structures, and agricultural settings. Infestations cause severe health concerns through disease transmission and result in costly property damage by gnawing through electrical wiring and structural materials. Current consumer options rely heavily on reactive, lethal traps deployed only after a rodent has already entered the home. Meanwhile, existing non-lethal repellents—such as conventional ultrasonic or seismic devices—frequently lack field-validated, long-term efficacy.

As an industry leader in rodent control, our goal is to complement our existing kill and trap lineup by establishing a true proactive defense category. We are seeking cutting-edge, technology-driven repellents and deterrence mechanisms that stop rodents before they enter living spaces or establish nests. Earlier, more effective prevention will allow consumers to protect their homes proactively and maintain a rodent-free environment with confidence.

What we're looking for

We are seeking novel physical or environmental deterrence devices and technologies that offer proven prolonged (1 month minimum) efficacy in repelling and/or deterring common rodent species (mice and rats). Relevant solutions should provide a continuous protective shield around one or more of the following residential living areas: basements, attics, storage sheds, barns, and immediate perimeters.

Any future consumer-facing hardware should prioritize low maintenance, simple DIY installation, and long-term unattended operation, while maintaining high repellency performance, child and pet safety, and non-disruptive household integration.

Solutions of interest include:
  • Perimeter & Barrier Technologies: Active or passive physical, sensory, or environmental technologies that deter rodents from protected areas or prevent entry into structures
  • Targeted Release & Delivery Systems: Precision dispenser, extended release carriers, and supporting components that can be paired with natural repellent, semiochemicals, or sensory deterrents
  • Repellent Actives & Formulations: Natural or synthetic rodent repellents, including semiochemicals, for incorporation into delivery systems
  • Eco-Conscious Design: Deterrence hardware incorporating sustainable materials, energy-efficient power design, & low-environmental-impact manufacturing
Our must-have requirements are:
  • Clear line of sight to a meaningful solution available commercially within the next 3 years
  • Empirical laboratory or field-trial data backing repellency and/or deterrence capabilities, or demonstrating the relevant performance of an enabling technology
  • Credible pathway to safe, non-disruptive operation around children, domestic pets, and non-target species during daily household life
Our nice-to-have's are:
  • Eco-conscious materials, recyclable components, or sustainable manufacturing practices
  • Prior submission, review, or approval by relevant regulatory/government bodies (EPA, USDA, state agencies, etc.)
  • Replicated, controlled field trials demonstrating statistically significant deterrent benefits in true consumer scenarios
  • Versatile adaptability across diverse environments, including indoor living spaces, storage areas, commercial structures, and outdoor perimeters
  • Clear design pathway toward low-maintenance, DIY residential installation and autonomous operation
What's out of scope:
  • Industrial-scale agricultural or commercial machinery unsuited for DIY residential spaces
  • Standalone software or mobile applications lacking physical hardware integration
  • Traditional lethal traps, kill mechanisms, or poison/bait stations (as these are already addressed in existing product lines)
  • Traditional ultrasonic or seismic frequency repellent devices lacking proven long-term efficacy
  • Untargeted, broadcast chemical applications or solutions requiring complex professional installation and maintenance
Acceptable technology readiness levels (TRL):
Levels 4-8
