Background

Oral health challenges such as caries, erosion, hypersensitivity, and plaque-related conditions persist despite widespread use of oral care products. A key limitation is the insufficient retention and targeted delivery of active ingredients within the oral environment, where salivary flow, mechanical disruption, and biofilm dynamics reduce efficacy over time.

Innovative technologies, ingredients, and formulations that enhance deposition, adhesion, and sustained release of oral care actives on tooth surfaces and within the biofilm matrix could improve protection against acid erosion, bacterial activity, and other oral health stressors.

Advances in delivery systems that enable extended contact time, including overnight protection and sub-gingival reach, along with approaches that support remineralization and reduce demineralization, have the potential to significantly enhance oral health outcomes in daily care routines.

What we're looking for

We are looking for products, technologies, or ingredients that deliver sustained oral care benefits through prolonged performance on tooth surfaces. This includes novel or improved active ingredients, as well as systems that increase their efficacy and longevity by enhancing the deposition, retention, and sustained release of actives. We are open to solutions providing protective barriers or coatings (including sub-gingival and supra-gingival protection) that prevent plaque and biofilm formation, protect against acid erosion and staining, and deliver long-lasting benefits such as anti-caries, anti-erosion, and anti-hypersensitivity effects. We are also interested in approaches that deliver meaningful and durable repair of enamel and dentin beyond conventional fluoride systems, as well as formulation and delivery strategies that increase contact time of actives with teeth and improve consumer experience through prolonged overnight efficacy.

Solutions of interest include:
  • Oral care devices
  • Complete formulated products
  • Individual active ingredients requiring formulation
  • Plaque removal and biofilm control solutions
  • Tooth surface protection and erosion prevention technologies
  • Enamel and dentin repair and remineralization solutions
  • Sustained retention and long-lasting activity systems
  • Targeted delivery systems for biofilm disruption on tooth surfaces (including sub- and supra-gingival regions)
  • Toothpaste and paste formulations
  • Gel-based oral care formulations
  • Mouth rinse formulations
  • Oral care strips and films
  • Combination or multi-format systems
Our must-have requirements are:
  • Preliminary data on improved efficacy (e.g., protection, deposition, retention/durability, delivery, or lesion repair) compared to current standard-of-care products (e.g., fluoride-based systems)
  • Demonstrates measurable benefit or provides a strong scientific rationale for impact in at least one key area such as anti-caries, plaque or tartar control, erosion protection, hypersensitivity reduction, or remineralization
  • Includes clear and credible evidence of effectiveness using recognized methods or well-supported experimental data
  • Provides evidence of safety (e.g., GRAS, food-grade, or prior human use) or a clear regulatory pathway
Our nice-to-have's are:
  • Enables ease of adoption, including compatibility with existing oral care routines and formats
  • Deposited mineral is resistant to subsequent damage/removal by brushing or acid challenge
  • Exhibits sustained activity or substantivity, such as prolonged retention and protection of hard tissue surfaces (enamel and dentine) or antimicrobial effect in the oral cavity
  • Sustained and measurable antimicrobial activity against pathogens involved of gingivitis and periodontitis
  • Performance (e.g., salivary pK changes, surface uptake) supported by data versus appropriate controls and standard technologies
  • Demonstrates stability, compatibility, and performance in full oral care formulations (e.g., fluoride, aqueous systems)
  • Includes advanced validation such as clinical data and consumer studies
  • Granted or filed patent applications
What's out of scope:
  • Technologies that provide only short-term or transient benefits
  • Prescription-only (Rx) solutions
  • Solutions requiring significant, long-term clinical development before commercialization
Acceptable technology readiness levels (TRL):
Levels 4-9
