Teflon alternatives with similar release properties from metal molds

Background

Consumer packaging plastics are produced by injection molding or thermoforming polymeric materials to metal molds. Since the polymers melt at high temperatures, the molds are generally heated by circulating heat transfer fluids through the mold channels. To prevent the polymers from sticking, the molds are coated with Teflon, which promotes easy release of the part at the end of the cycle. Teflon, however, has sustainability concerns from the FDA due to the presence of (PFOA) perfluorooctanoic acid and (PFOS) perfluorooctanesulphonic acid. We are looking for alternative coatings or technologies that will provide similar or better release properties compared to Teflon that are not fluorinated.

What we're looking for

We are seeking coatings or technologies that promote the release of polyester, polyamide thermoformed or injection molded parts from metal molds without using Teflon. The solution should be durable and should not peel off from the surface of the metal mold at operating temperatures exceeding 400°F.

Solutions of interest include:
  • Polymeric coatings
  • Inorganic coatings
  • Tool making processes
  • Surface texturing
  • Metal surface treatment
Our must-have requirements are:
  • Durable over 500,000+ mold impressions at temperatures between 0°F and 400°F
  • Scratch-resistant at the temperature of use
  • Release properties equivalent to or better than Teflon from 0- 360°F
  • Non-reactive with the polymer during molding processing, i.e. the solution should not impede the part releasing form the mold.
  • Capable of receiving approval for FDA food contact (If you have a chemistry that works but isn’t in the menu of indirect or direct food contact, we can work with you on that.)
Our nice-to-have's are:
  • Adaptable by tool manufacturers with common application methods
  • Surface compatibility with tool steel, stainless steel, aluminum, bronze and other metals, etc mold
What's out of scope:
  • Nanoparticles (Although we will consider those with higher aspect ratio or evidence they can be used without harming humans)
  • Toxic materials
