Background

Consumers want visibly whiter teeth but the most effective whitening treatments, i.e. bleaching via peroxides, are known to cause sensitivity. Those who already experience tooth sensitivity are specially cautious about using strong whitening treatments, fearing they will worsen their condition. While sensitivity toothpastes help manage discomfort, they do not provide the level of whitening that many consumers desire. As a result, there is growing interest in whitening solutions that deliver visibly whiter teeth without worsening sensitivity, or ideally, solutions that both brighten teeth and alleviate tooth sensitivity.

What we're looking for

We are looking for new ingredients, raw materials, and technologies that offer tooth whitening and/or stain prevention benefits and can be formulated into a daily-use toothpaste or potentially other oral care delivery format.

Solutions of interest include:
  • Abrasives that gently remove surface stains (preferably low vs high abrasiveness)
  • Chemical cleaning agents to remove surface stain
  • Optical brighteners
  • Alternative bleaching agents (e.g., oxygen-activated whitening compounds)
  • Professional whitening agents (e.g., alumina, pumice)
  • Agents that improve the performance of one of the other technologies (e.g., pH modifiers, activators for peroxide, etc.)
  • Retention agents that help maintain key actives on the tooth surface for prolonged efficacy
  • Multi-week regimens that deliver progressive whitening results without requiring extended leave-on times per application
  • Coating technologies to prevent stain adhesion
  • Enzymatic cleaners that break down stains
  • Surface-active agents that improve the tooth surface’s spectral appearance by enhancing glossiness or improving opacity
Our must-have requirements are:
  • Optimized cleaning, stain removal, and/or stain prevention
  • Data proving efficacy in vitro or in vivo
  • Significant improvement in visible whiteness (e.g., greater than 2 shades)
  • Fast-acting whitening or effective with repeated 1-5 minute exposures
  • No negative impact on tooth sensitivity
Our nice-to-have's are:
  • Ideally suitable for global regulatory approval
  • Safe and suitable for daily oral use, whether leave-in or rinse-out
  • Acceptable taste and sensory attributes, with any negatives clearly identified
  • Cost-effective for inclusion in a daily-use consumer product
  • Sustainable solutions (e.g., CO2 footprint)
What's out of scope:
  • Traditional high-peroxide bleaching treatments known to increase tooth sensitivity
  • Slow-acting treatments that require prolonged application times and extended use
Acceptable technology readiness levels (TRL):
Levels 3-9

In the Whitening context, we have materials that support Whitening cues and Sensory. Would it be of interest to your team? As these are not alternatives to H202. Thanks!
