On-site biological conversion of spent peel using black soldier fly (BSF) larvae to produce insect protein meal, lipid, and stabilized frass soil amendment. Accepts acidic, high-moisture peel with only neutralization — no drying or pressing. Batch variability becomes a recipe parameter. Modular 10–30 t/day sites with no on-site breeding unit required.
FreezeM, a black soldier fly (BSF) reproduction specialist, offers a modular on-site bioconversion solution that transforms spent peel — a high-volume, high-moisture waste stream from fruit processing — into three saleable outputs: insect protein meal, lipid, and stabilized frass soil amendment. The process uses BSF larvae to consume the moisture and soluble fraction of neutralized peel in situ, eliminating the need for energy-intensive drying or pressing that burdens conventional waste treatment.
The value proposition is threefold: new revenue from protein and lipid products, a high-quality fertilizer output, and reduced neutralization and disposal costs. Pectin-extraction peel is largely limonene-depleted, removing the usual barrier to citrus in insect diets and making the substrate especially well-suited to BSF bioconversion.

Development plan: Validation is staged across three phases — diet screening and larval trials (0–3 months), tonne-scale repeat runs and business case development (3–9 months), and a 12-month operating modular site with continuous recipe optimization (9–24 months).
The technology is at an early validation stage. Phase 1 bench-scale diet screening characterizes substrate variability (dry matter, pH, fiber, protein, sugars, minerals, nitrates, solvent residues) and runs larval trials at 0–40% inclusion against controls, measuring larval weight, feed conversion ratio, survival, and substrate mass and moisture reduction. A positive business case from tonne-scale runs gates progression to a 12-month operating modular site at a selected processing facility.
Founded in 2018 by researchers from the Weizmann Institute of Science, FreezeM is a premier Black Soldier Fly reproduction specialist. The company focuses on unlocking the potential of insects to solve global sustainability challenges, specifically in waste reduction and alternative protein production.
