Global Algae Innovations has developed advanced algae cultivation techniques to economically produce algae as a feedstock for chemicals, polymers, fuels, feed, and food. This includes the conversion of fatty acids into biofuels and other applications, supported by ongoing R&D.

Overview

Global Algae Innovations is pioneering the use of algae as a versatile and sustainable feedstock for various industries. By refining open raceway algae cultivation and harvesting methods, we aim to make algae economically viable for producing chemicals, polymers, fuels, feed, and food. The fatty acids extracted from our algae serve as a prime resource for biofuels through the HEFA process and can be transformed into polyols and polyurethanes, offering a sustainable alternative to traditional feedstocks.

Technical specifications

Our technology leverages the ability to fractionate algae oil via hydrolysis into fatty acids, followed by distillation into specific compounds like C16:0 and C16:1. These can be further processed through winterization to provide a consistent chemical feedstock. The algae cultivation is currently being scaled from an 8-acre R&D farm in Kauai to a pilot-scale operation in California with individual raceway sizes of 12 acres. This scale-up is supported by a dozen R&D projects focused on cost reduction and quality improvement across algae cultivation, harvesting, and downstream processing.

Technology readiness level

Currently at TRL 5, the technology is being validated through pilot-scale operations. Efforts are underway to demonstrate key performance parameters over extended periods and secure product off-takes by engaging with end-users through product sampling. This will facilitate the transition to commercial-scale production.

About Global Algae Innovations

Global Algae Innovations has developed a comprehensive suite of technologies designed to make large-scale algae cultivation commercially viable for producing food, feed, fuel, and industrial polymers. The company’s process addresses historical bottlenecks in algae production by implementing dozens of innovations—including eleven major technical breakthroughs—that significantly reduce both capital costs and energy consumption. Their technology platform operates at an engineering scale, utilizing advanced open raceway systems that can be integrated with direct air capture or power plant flue gas to sequester carbon dioxide while producing high-quality algal protein, oils, and nutraceuticals like Spirulina. By achieving an order of magnitude improvement in production efficiency compared to conventional methods, the company aims to scale its operations to provide sustainable commodity alternatives.

This technology provides critical solutions for customers and partners looking to address climate change, protein shortages, and the need for low-carbon energy sources such as sustainable aviation fuel. The company’s work has been validated through multi-year research and development, including projects supported by the U.S. Department of Energy and competitive recognition in programs like the XPRIZE Carbon Removal. By providing a pathway to economical algae-based production, Global Algae Innovations helps industrial partners reduce their carbon footprint while enabling the cost-effective creation of essential goods. The organization maintains operational facilities in Hawaii and California, focusing on scaling its integrated cultivation and processing technology to meet global demand for renewable proteins and oils.
