About renewable energy generation

Biomass, not sunlight, is what most of the work on Halo turns into energy. Six entries convert a residue or an algal crop into a fuel or a pellet, and three build a lead-free perovskite for photovoltaics. Wind appears once, as a modeling problem. On Halo it spans four groups, including biomass and waste into fuel, algae as a feedstock, and lead-free photovoltaic perovskites.

Stage of development. Work on renewable energy generation on Halo is split between university programs and companies. 33% of the solutions are in market. Co-development and licensing are the usual partnering routes, and about 28% of the solutions that state terms offer pilot engagements.

Three trends in renewable energy technologies on Halo

Renewable mostly means biomass. Six of fourteen entries burn, pyrolyze, digest or carbonize something: manure-buffered co-digestion of an acidic side stream, hydrothermal carbonization into hydrochar pellets, solar pyrolysis of recycling waste, tire pyrolysis, and an oilseed composition offered against biodiesel. Three more grow algae as the feedstock for the same purpose.

Photovoltaics arrives as a lead problem. All three solar entries are lead-free perovskites from one program, and all three argue the same two points: a bandgap near 1eV matched to the solar spectrum, and stability against heat and moisture. Perovskite efficiency stopped being the obstacle some time ago; toxicity and degradation are what remain.

Algae is its own cluster. Three entries grow algae and none of them agrees on the product. One cultivates for chemicals, polymers, fuels, feed and food at once, one grows microalgae on palm oil mill effluent for bio-naphtha and jet fuel, and one runs open ponds on biofuel economics alone. The feedstock is settled; what it is worth is not.

Frequently asked questions

What are renewable energy technologies?

Renewable energy generation covers producing energy from something that is not a fossil fuel. It spans lead-free photovoltaic perovskites, biomass and waste converted into a renewable fuel or pellet, algae grown as a feedstock, and the modeling and land assessment around a generating asset. Utilities, developers and fuel producers are the buyers.
