Advanced microencapsulation R&D: smart microcapsules with programmable & triggered release

INCAPTEK is a Swiss deep-tech startup specialising in tailor-made microencapsulation solutions. Our smart microcapsules not only isolate active substances from the environment but also enable programmable and triggered release. Our technology is based on layer-by-layer polyelectrolyte microcapsules invented by our CSO, Prof Gleb Sukhorukov (Forbes top 10 scientist).

Unlike liposomes, our microcapsules are highly stable. Our technology produces microcapsules with a true shell that provides a physical barrier for encapsulated compounds, protecting them from environmental factors (moisture, oxidation, and stomach acidity), improving their bioavailability, stability, and shelf life, and masking taste and odour.

But where our technology offers unique advantages is precise control over the release of active substances:

1. Programmable release: We can programme the shell to open and release its payload at a predetermined time, with specific kinetics and dosage.
2. Environment-triggered release: We can design the shell that releases its contents in response to changes in pH, ionic strength (salinity), pressure, and temperature. We also offer enzymatically triggered and cancer-specific release (drugs are released only in cancer cells, leaving healthy cells intact).
3. Externally-triggered release: We can enable remote, on-demand release using portable ultrasound or a near-infrared (NIR) laser.

Our platform is exceptionally versatile. We can encapsulate practically any substance, regardless of molecular weight and solubility, including small molecules and microelements. We can co-encapsulate multiple substances in a single microcapsule and offer full control over particle size (from a few to hundreds of microns). Our microcapsules possess a high loading capacity (75-80%) and are made from FDA/EMA-approved bio-based and natural polymers, as well as biodegradable synthetic polymers.
