An ATV-mounted machine vision and AI platform that automates apple flower and fruit counting, detects diseased trees, and delivers actionable yield estimates and remediation guidance to tree fruit producers.
Accurate yield prediction and early identification of tree health issues remain persistent challenges for tree fruit producers. This solution offers an automated orchard monitoring system that combines machine vision and artificial intelligence to count flower blooms and apples, detect diseased fruit and trees, and generate improved yield estimates. Mounted on an all-terrain vehicle (ATV), the platform captures orchard data and translates it into clear, actionable insights for growers, including predicted productivity, suggested trimming, and targeted remediation for growing issues.
The system is currently in an early-stage research and development phase at the University of Guelph, supported by internal funding. Preliminary flower-counting results using the YOLO model have been successful, and the project is now expanding data collection across additional growth phases. Approximately one year of additional data collection and labeling is anticipated, with iterative refinement expected as the dataset grows. The platform is not yet commercially deployed but is positioned for collaborative development toward field-ready validation.
The University of Guelph is a comprehensive, mid-sized public research university in Guelph, Ontario. Industry partners engage through an on-campus research park and the Ontario Veterinary College’s teaching hospitals, which enable product evaluation and clinical translation. The university’s Arboretum and the nearby Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada Guelph Research and Development Centre offer living laboratories and federal linkages that support collaborative R&D. Research is backed by competitive federal funding and strong provincial support via the Ontario Agri‑Food Innovation Alliance. The Research Innovation Office serves as the university’s technology transfer and industry liaison hub, supporting IP, licensing, and co‑funded partnerships.
