A deep learning object detection system designed to identify eight high-risk invasive insect pest species from amateur mobile phone photography. Building on a proven 2-class model that achieved 93-96% accuracy, this project aims to deliver a biosecurity tool to enhance early detection and readiness, protecting New Zealand's biodiversity, food security, and residue-free production systems.
This project develops a computer vision and deep learning model capable of detecting eight of New Zealand's most threatening invasive insect pest species from everyday mobile phone images. The target species include Brown marmorated stink bug, Bagrada bug, Yellow-spotted stink bug, Fall armyworm, Gypsy moth, Oriental fruit fly, Queensland fruit fly, and Mediterranean fruit fly. Early and accurate identification of these pests is critical for biosecurity readiness, as their arrival could cause multi-billion dollar impacts on agriculture, native ecosystems, and New Zealand's premium residue-free production systems.
The solution is designed for practical field use, enabling farmers, biosecurity officers, and the public to capture images with smartphones and receive rapid species identification. By combining public and private datasets, the model aims to achieve at least 90% average accuracy across all eight species at various life stages.

The project builds on a previously validated 2-class detection model with demonstrated accuracy above 93% on real-world image datasets. The current proposal extends this proven approach to eight species using a larger, more diverse dataset. The next stage involves dataset assembly, model training, and validation against the 90% accuracy target. The technology is at an early-to-mid development stage, moving from proof-of-concept toward a field-ready biosecurity detection tool.
Invert Robotics designs and manufactures specialized non-destructive testing (NDT) robotic crawler platforms that operate remotely in confined or hazardous industrial spaces. The company’s technology includes patented vacuum, magnetic, and hybrid adhesion systems, enabling its robots to climb and maneuver across various surfaces, including stainless steel, aluminum, glass, and plastic. By deploying these modular platforms, Invert Robotics replaces the need for human entry into dangerous environments, providing high-precision visual inspection, ultrasonic testing, and laser surface mapping. These solutions are engineered to detect defects at the micron level, ensuring rigorous safety and compliance standards for complex industrial assets.
These robotic systems significantly enhance operational efficiency for clients in industries such as food production, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, energy, and aerospace. By eliminating the necessity for scaffolding or manual confined space entry, the company minimizes facility downtime, allowing for faster, repeatable, and data-driven maintenance planning. With a track record of thousands of global inspections, Invert Robotics helps plant managers prolong asset integrity, improve workplace safety, and increase overall operations reliability through actionable, high-definition inspection data.
