A research initiative to identify novel antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) from filamentous fungi using genome mining and heterologous expression. These natural antibiotics target pathogens affecting Solanaceae crops, offering low-toxicity, broad-spectrum candidates for next-generation biopesticide development in sustainable agriculture.
This project seeks to discover and characterize novel antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) from filamentous fungi as candidates for biopesticide development targeting pathogens of the Solanaceae family. AMPs are natural antibiotic molecules secreted by bacteria, fungi, plants, and animals that serve as key components of innate immune systems. They offer a broad action spectrum and low toxicity, making them attractive alternatives to conventional chemical pesticides. By leveraging Colombia's exceptional microbial biodiversity and AGROSAVIA's national microbial collection, the initiative aims to unlock new biocontrol agents that can protect important crops while supporting sustainable agricultural practices.
Research approach:
Prior validation precedent:
This research is at an early-to-mid stage of development, corresponding to TRL 3–4. The methodology builds on previously validated genome mining and heterologous expression workflows that have already produced AMPs with demonstrated antifungal activity. The current project aims to expand the AMP discovery pipeline by sequencing ten additional fungi and characterizing new candidates. The full study, including in vitro and in planta validation, is projected to take one year to complete. Successful outcomes will yield characterized peptide candidates ready for further efficacy optimization and formulation development toward commercial biopesticide applications.
AGROSAVIA is a Colombian decentralized public entity of mixed non-profit participation dedicated to agricultural science, technology, and innovation. The organization focuses on generating scientific knowledge and developing agricultural technology through research, technological adaptation, and the dissemination of technical expertise. Its operations are organized into specialized innovation networks, including cacao, fruits, vegetables, livestock, permanent crops, and roots and tubers. By bridging the gap between advanced research and practical application, AGROSAVIA develops improved crop varieties, such as biofortified beans and sugarcane, and establishes integrated management protocols to enhance agricultural productivity and sustainability.
These efforts are vital for Colombian agricultural producers, providing them with the tools and knowledge necessary to improve competitiveness, ensure sustainable natural resource management, and raise their quality of life. Through initiatives like field schools and the provision of technical assistance, the corporation facilitates the transfer of technology and information to small-scale farmers. By fostering collaboration between the public and private sectors, AGROSAVIA acts as a key driver for technical change in the national agricultural sector, helping producers modernize their practices and address challenges related to climate resilience and food security.
