Novel oxazolidine-based safener compounds designed to protect crops from herbicide-induced injury, particularly for sulfonylurea herbicide applications. The derivatives combine active pharmacodynamic groups of commercial safeners through amide bonds to create new crop protection agents.

Overview

Sulfonylurea herbicides are among the most widely used herbicides worldwide, but improper use and excessive dosage have created significant challenges in modern agriculture. This research proposes the design and synthesis of novel aryl-substituted formyl oxazolidine derivatives as herbicide safeners, compounds that protect crops from herbicide injury without reducing herbicidal effectiveness on target weeds.

The approach builds on established safener chemistry principles, combining active pharmacodynamic groups from commercial safeners through amide bonds into a new molecular framework. Safeners are typically deployed alongside specific post-emergence herbicides for cereal crop applications, offering a practical pathway to safer and more sustainable herbicide use in grain production systems.

Technical specifications

Key features:

  • Design strategy based on active group combination principles, integrating known safener pharmacophores into a novel oxazolidine scaffold
  • Compounds synthesized via sequential reaction of alcohol and ketone mixtures with oxazolidine, NaOH, and aryl chloride
  • Evaluation includes maize seed injury recovery assays measuring growth index recovery rates
  • GST (glutathione S-transferase) activity assays to assess detoxification pathway enhancement
  • ALS (acetolactate synthase) activity measurement using ELISA to confirm herbicide target protection
  • Molecular docking studies using SYBYL-X 2.0 to understand binding interactions

The research builds on prior validated work, including novel trichloromethyl dichlorophenyltriazole derivatives, 1,3-disubstituted diazocyclic derivatives, diazo dicyclic derivatives, and ester-substituted pyrazole derivatives, demonstrating an established track record of successfully generating new active compounds through structural combination methods.

Technology readiness level

This research is at an early experimental stage. The synthesis protocol for target compounds has been defined, and biological activity validation procedures including injury recovery, GST activity, ALS activity, and molecular docking studies are planned or underway. The approach is supported by prior published work from the research group demonstrating feasibility of the active structure combination method for developing new safener candidates.

About Northeast Agricultural University

Northeast Agricultural University is a major public agricultural university in Harbin, China, with a research-intensive profile and strong ties to regional production. Experimental farms, greenhouses, and field stations provide testbeds for cold-region conditions, while on-campus labs support analysis, prototyping, and pilot evaluation. Industry collaboration is organized through university-industry joint labs and demonstration bases that connect faculty with producers and processors across the Northeast grain belt. Research is supported by competitive national and provincial funding, including the National Natural Science Foundation of China and programs from national ministries. A dedicated technology transfer office supports IP, licensing, and industry contracting.
