Evaluation of two plant-derived terpenoid compounds, betulinic acid and centraterin, for molluscicidal activity against leech pests affecting legume crops. Preliminary tests suggest both molecules exhibit action against terrestrial molluscs, positioning them as candidates for sustainable, nature-based crop protection solutions.
This research evaluates the molluscicidal potential of two plant-derived bioactive compounds, betulinic acid (a pentacyclic lupane-type triterpenoid) and centraterin (a lactone sesquiterpene from the furanoheliangolide group), against leeches that act as pests in legume crop production. Preliminary laboratory tests have indicated that both substances possess molluscicidal properties effective against terrestrial molluscs, suggesting they may also be applicable to leech pest management. The work aims to expand the range of natural, biodegradable alternatives available for integrated pest management in legume agriculture.

Proposed evaluation approach:
This research is at an early discovery stage. The hypothesis is supported by preliminary observations of molluscicidal activity against terrestrial molluscs, but specific validation against leech pests of legume crops has not yet been performed. Further controlled experiments are required to confirm efficacy, determine dose ranges, and assess practical applicability before any formulation or field deployment can be considered.
Fundação Oswaldo Cruz (Fiocruz) is Brazil’s national public health research foundation and graduate education institution, headquartered in Rio de Janeiro with a network of campuses and units across the country. Its industry-facing infrastructure includes co-located GMP facilities for vaccines and other biologics alongside a pharmaceutical development and manufacturing unit, enabling scale-up, quality testing, and technology transfer. Reference laboratories, high-biosafety facilities, and a clinical research hospital support surveillance, trials, and regulatory-grade evaluation in collaboration with public and private partners. Fiocruz’s research is sustained by competitive federal funding in Brazil and support from international agencies and foundations.
