University

Ruta chalepensis extracts offer a sustainable, eco-friendly nematicidal solution to control root-knot nematodes, leveraging bioactive compounds for effective egg hatching inhibition and juvenile mortality. This approach is compatible with integrated pest management strategies.

Overview

Ruta chalepensis extracts present a sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative to conventional chemical nematicides for controlling plant-parasitic nematodes, specifically root-knot nematodes. These extracts contain bioactive compounds that demonstrate significant nematicidal effects, such as inhibiting egg hatching and increasing juvenile mortality. This plant-based solution is not only safe for the environment but also aligns well with integrated pest management (IPM) strategies, offering a promising approach to nematode management without the drawbacks of synthetic chemicals.

Technical specifications
  • Bioactive compounds: Derived from Ruta chalepensis, known for its antiparasitic properties.
  • Methodology: Utilizes bioguided fractionation to isolate and purify the most active fractions.
  • Application: Optimized for systemic use with nanocarriers such as soy lecithin micelles to enhance stability and efficacy.
  • Evaluation: Conducted through in vitro assays to determine dose-response patterns and efficacy in inhibiting nematode egg hatching and juvenile mortality.
Technology readiness level

The technology is at TRL 4, with laboratory validation of its components. The next steps include further optimization and greenhouse trials to evaluate real-world efficacy.
