Biodegradable hydrogel films made from lactobionic acid and whey protein isolate offer active food packaging solutions by inhibiting microbial growth and extending shelf life, utilizing dairy industry side streams.
Bioactive hydrogel films are at the forefront of next-generation food packaging solutions, designed to inhibit microbial growth and oxidative degradation in perishable foods. Developed from lactobionic acid (LBA) and whey protein isolate (WPI), both derived from dairy industry side streams, these films provide a sustainable and functional alternative to conventional plastic packaging. The films aim to significantly reduce microbial load and extend the shelf life of food products while maintaining clean-label status.
The innovative hydrogel films are engineered to optimize mechanical integrity and water vapor permeability, ensuring robust performance in active food packaging applications. Key features include:
Currently at TRL 3, this technology has demonstrated lab-scale feasibility for individual components. The integration of LBA and WPI into hydrogel films presents a novel opportunity for industrial application. The upcoming phases will focus on pilot-scale production and comprehensive functional testing, including mechanical, antimicrobial, and antioxidant evaluations. Engagement with industry stakeholders will facilitate regulatory guidance and support scalability.
The University of Guelph is a comprehensive, mid-sized public research university in Guelph, Ontario. Industry partners engage through an on-campus research park and the Ontario Veterinary College’s teaching hospitals, which enable product evaluation and clinical translation. The university’s Arboretum and the nearby Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada Guelph Research and Development Centre offer living laboratories and federal linkages that support collaborative R&D. Research is backed by competitive federal funding and strong provincial support via the Ontario Agri‑Food Innovation Alliance. The Research Innovation Office serves as the university’s technology transfer and industry liaison hub, supporting IP, licensing, and co‑funded partnerships.
