ProPlantae offers a proprietary collection of over 100 antagonistic fungal strains (Trichoderma, Aureobasidium, Epicoccum, Alternaria, Clonostachys) to develop biocontrol solutions against Fusarium oxysporum Tropical Race 4, the devastating banana pathogen. The laboratory provides in vitro screening, antagonism evaluation, and volatile/non-volatile inhibition assays to identify effective candidates for sustainable disease management.
Fusarium oxysporum Tropical Race 4 (TR4) is one of the most destructive pathogens affecting banana production worldwide, with no fully effective chemical control available. ProPlantae Sanidad Vegetal SL is developing a biocontrol approach that leverages a proprietary collection of more than 100 endophytic and antagonistic fungal strains to combat this pathogen. The laboratory has previously demonstrated the ability of certain strains to completely inhibit the growth of major plant pathogens, and now seeks to extend this capability to TR4. This work supports the urgent need for sustainable, environmentally friendly alternatives to chemical fungicides in banana cultivation and other susceptible crops.

The technology is at an early-to-mid research and development stage. The microbial collection and in vitro screening methodologies are established and have been validated against other plant pathogens. The specific application to Fusarium oxysporum TR4 represents a new research direction that has not yet been tested. The proposed multi-stage validation plan (initial screening, top-10 selection, replicated antagonism and volatile/non-volatile assays, statistical analysis, and candidate selection) is designed to advance the technology toward identifying lead biocontrol strains. Further validation in greenhouse and field conditions would be needed before commercial deployment.
ProPlantae Sanidad Vegetal SL is a biotechnological laboratory focused on plant health and research, development, and innovation (R&D&i). The company specializes in the diagnosis of plant diseases and the prescription of sustainable treatments, working to reduce the reliance on chemical phytosanitary products in agriculture. Its technical operations include the analysis of plant and soil samples, isolation and identification of pathogens, and field visits for monitoring. The company differentiates itself through its application of biotechnology to develop new agrobiological solutions, utilizing a proprietary collection of microorganisms, as well as plant extracts, to control pathogens and improve crop sustainability.
This work is central to supporting sustainable food production and environmental protection, catering to agricultural needs through personalized diagnostic services and collaborative research projects with both public and private institutions. Founded by Vanesa Redondo Fernández, a biotechnologist with extensive experience in phytopathology and biocontrol, ProPlantae provides expert advice to help farmers detect pathogens early and implement effective, environmentally conscious management strategies. The company serves as a partner for those seeking to integrate science-based, sustainable practices into their crop management regimes and research efforts.
