Overview

This solution introduces a novel method for synthesizing biodegradable cationic polymers using β-cyclodextrin and starch. Developed under the principles of green chemistry, the process avoids organic solvents and high temperatures, using only natural polymers and non-toxic amines. This environmentally friendly approach results in polymers that are not only biodegradable but also effective in applications such as organic contaminant removal and active substance deposition.

Technical specifications

The synthesis occurs in two stages at 40⁰ C or lower in an aqueous medium. The first stage produces a functionalized intermediate, while the second stage yields the final cationic polymer. Key features include:

  • Materials: Natural polymers (β-cyclodextrin or starch) and non-toxic diamines or amino acids.
  • Process: Conducted without organic solvents, ensuring low energy consumption and cost effectiveness.
  • Applications: Effective in removing organic contaminants, and potential for active substance deposition and conditioning.

This technology is currently at TRL 3, indicating that the experimental proof of concept has been developed and further validation in laboratory settings is ongoing.
