About remediation technologies

Two contaminants account for most of the work on Halo. Eleven entries treat selenium in groundwater, half of them electrochemically and half in place with iron, magnetite or bacteria. Thirteen more pull nitrogen and phosphorus out of urban stormwater, almost all of them through a filter medium. On Halo it spans five groups, including selenium reduced electrochemically, selenium treated in place, and nutrients out of urban stormwater.

Stage of development. Work on remediation technologies on Halo comes mostly from university programs. 31% of the solutions are in market. Rowan University and Imperial College London have the most, followed by International Centre for Clean Water. Sponsored research and co-development are the usual partnering routes, and about 58% of the solutions that state terms offer licensing.

Three trends in remediation technologies on Halo

Eleven answers to selenium. Five reduce it electrochemically and six treat it in place, with zero-valent iron, magnetite generated by oxidizing Fe(II), permeable barriers of biosolids, or Pseudomonas putida. Four of them name the same secondary constraint: do not mobilize arsenic while you are doing it. The cluster looks like one mining request answered by eleven groups.

Stormwater is a media selection problem. Thirteen entries remove nitrogen and phosphorus from urban runoff, and almost every one is a filter medium, not a process: biochar in several forms, zeolite with zero-valent iron, aluminum treatment residuals, magnesium oxide pellets, activated carbon coated with iron and manganese oxides, and microbial soil crusts. Two put the media under permeable paving.

Waste as the sorbent. Several entries are made from something discarded. Chitosan beads from waste shellfish, filter granules from aluminum water treatment residuals, biochar from bioresiduals, titania templated on red seaweed carrageenan with no solvent. Remediation media are bought by the tonne and buried, so the feedstock cost decides whether any of it gets used.

Frequently asked questions

What are remediation technologies?

Remediation technologies covers cleaning up water that has already been contaminated, usually where it sits. It spans electrochemical and in-situ treatment of selenium in groundwater, media and engineered systems that pull nitrogen and phosphorus out of urban stormwater, adsorbents for metals and organic compounds, and photocatalysts that break a pollutant down under sunlight. Mining operators, municipalities and environmental engineers are the buyers.
