Biodegradable matrices for controlled nitrogen stabiliser release

Technology
In development
Company

Innovative biodegradable polymer matrices deliver slow-release nitrogen stabilisers, enhancing nitrogen use efficiency in agriculture. Using PHAs, these matrices enable customizable and controlled release durations, improving the efficacy and sustainability of nitrogen stabilisers.

Overview

This innovative solution leverages biodegradable polymer matrices to create a controlled-release system for nitrogen stabilisers, significantly enhancing nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) in agricultural applications. By embedding stabilisers within biodegradable polymers such as polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), the encapsulation allows for a tailored release of nutrients over extended periods, ranging from 6 to 12 months. This approach optimizes the timing of inhibitor release, leading to improved crop yields and reduced environmental impact.

Technical specifications

Key features:

  • Utilizes biodegradable polymers like PHAs for encapsulation of nitrogen stabilisers.
  • Customizable release durations achieved by adjusting polymer type, blend composition, stabiliser loading, and particle size.
  • Incorporates hydrophilic or rapidly degradable domains for pulsed release, with options for pH or temperature-triggered release.
  • Demonstrated control over nitrification inhibitor release using DCD, with ongoing research involving DMPP, NBPT, and other compounds.
Technology readiness level

Currently, this technology is at TRL 4, having demonstrated control over release rates and mechanisms under lab conditions. The next phase involves further development and validation of PHA-based matrices for controlled-release applications, including testing in soil environments and evaluating nitrogen use efficiency in model crop tests.
