Innovative biodegradable micro/nanobeads use polyhydroxybutyrate and cellulose acetate phthalate for pH-responsive delivery of hydrophobic and water-soluble bioactive ingredients, ideal for personal care and cosmetics.
This innovative technology involves the development of biodegradable micro/nanobeads composed of polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) and cellulose acetate phthalate (CAP). These materials create a pH-responsive matrix capable of delivering hydrophobic and water-soluble bioactive compounds. This makes them particularly suitable for applications in personal care and cosmetics, providing a sustainable and effective method for active ingredient delivery.
The micro/nanobeads are formulated using a specialized protocol to load compounds like astaxanthin and niacinamide into the biodegradable PHB/CAP matrix. The beads exhibit pH-responsiveness, which allows for controlled release of the active ingredients based on environmental pH changes. Cytotoxicity assays using PSVK1 and EpiSkin® cell lines have demonstrated the safety of these microbeads, which have also passed clinical safety evaluations for skin irritation and sensitization.
Key features:
This technology is currently at TRL 5, indicating that it has been validated in a relevant environment. Further development and partnering are sought to advance the technology for commercial applications, with a focus on loading specific hydrophobic compounds as requested by partners.
