Technology
In development
University

Innovative colorimetric strips enable visual detection of biogenic amines for continuous monitoring. Originally electrochemical, this method is adapted for paper substrates to detect compounds like putrescine and cadaverine efficiently.

Overview

Biogenic amines, such as putrescine and cadaverine, are indicators of food spoilage and other biochemical processes. This innovative technology utilizes a colorimetric approach to detect these compounds, enabling continuous monitoring with the naked eye. The technology is being adapted from an electrochemical method to a paper-based strip format, offering a simple and efficient way to identify these amines in various matrices without interference from amino acids.

Technical specifications
  • Colorimetric detection: Utilizes a visual method to identify the presence of biogenic amines.
  • Paper-based strips: The technology is being developed to be implemented on paper substrates, providing an easy-to-use, cost-effective solution.
  • Sensitive detection: Capable of detecting biogenic amines like putrescine and cadaverine at ppm levels.
  • Non-interfering with matrix: Functions effectively even in the presence of potentially interfering substances such as amino acids.
Technology readiness level

This technology is currently at TRL 4, indicating that it has been validated in a lab setting and is being upgraded for real-world environmental testing.
