Violacein, a bacterial pigment, can be incorporated into agrochemical formulations to provide UV protection. It is non-toxic to plants, can be produced at scale, and absorbs UV light to reduce or prevent UV degradation of active ingredients. Its distinct purple color (absorbing at 577 nm) also enables visual coverage marking, offering dual functionality for agricultural application.

Overview

Violacein is a biologically sourced pigment that can be integrated into agrochemical formulations to serve as a UV protectant. Derived from specific non-pathogenic strains of Chromobacterium, violacein is easily and affordably produced in large quantities. Its ability to absorb UV light at specific wavelengths makes it an effective agent for reducing or preventing UV degradation of agrochemicals. Additionally, its distinct purple color (absorbing at 577 nm) allows it to function as a visual marker for application coverage, providing dual functionality in agrochemical applications.

Technical specifications

Violacein is insoluble in water but dissolves readily in various organic solvents, facilitating its extraction and integration into agrochemical products. It has been tested for plant toxicity and found to be non-toxic to roots, shoots, and seeds of several plant species. Furthermore, violacein demonstrates selective antifungal properties, inhibiting some phylosphere fungi while generally not affecting soil fungi, which could offer additional benefits in agricultural settings.

Key features:

  • High molar extinction in methanol for UV protection
  • Non-toxic and environmentally safe
  • Dual functionality as a UV protectant and application marker
Technology readiness level

This technology is currently at TRL 2. While initial feasibility has been demonstrated, further validation is required. Planned steps include detailed UV range absorbance studies, proof-of-concept experiments with agrochemical combinations, and greenhouse trials.
