Novel fungicide development platform based on bisindole alkaloids with demonstrated activity against 14 plant pathogens. The research team has synthesized topsentin, nortopsentin, streptindole, hyrtinadine, barakacin, and arundine derivatives showing EC50 values of 10–40 μg/mL, offering a new approach to combat drug resistance in agricultural fungicides.

Overview

This research program focuses on developing novel fungicidal agents derived from bisindole alkaloids to address the growing challenge of plant fungal diseases. Traditional fungicides often lead to drug resistance with prolonged use, creating an urgent need for new active compounds with novel mechanisms of action. Bisindole alkaloids, which are naturally abundant and structurally unique, offer a promising foundation for discovering next-generation fungicides with broad-spectrum activity.

The team has already established a mature fungicide research and development platform and synthesized multiple bisindole alkaloid families. Several candidate molecules have demonstrated effective fungicidal activity against 14 plant pathogens, with EC50 values in the 10–40 μg/mL range. Future work aims to expand the compound library, broaden pathogen screening, evaluate field efficacy, and investigate molecular toxicity to advance promising candidates toward practical application.

Technology readiness level

The research is currently at an advanced discovery and lead optimization stage. The team has validated fungicidal activity of multiple bisindole alkaloid families against a broad panel of 14 plant pathogens, confirming the viability of this chemical class for fungicide development. The next phase of validation will focus on expanding the small molecule library, conducting structure-activity relationship studies, evaluating field efficacy, and assessing molecular toxicity over an estimated two-year timeline. This work is expected to yield pesticide candidates with new mechanisms of action suitable for further development toward commercial application.

About Tianjin Normal University

Tianjin Normal University is a large public comprehensive research university in Tianjin, China, with about 35,000 full-time students and a long-standing teacher-education mission. Its 3,500-acre campus and regional training facilities support collaboration with schools, public agencies, and companies across the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei region. The university maintains provincial- and ministerial-level research platforms, international joint research centers, university–enterprise laboratories, and a science park in the Tiankai Higher Education Science and Technology Innovation Park, creating routes for shared facilities, incubated firms, and applied R&D partnerships. Funding comes through the National Natural Science Foundation of China, National Social Science Fund of China, Ministry of Education programs, and Tianjin municipal sources. A dedicated science and technology office supports technology contracts, licensing, and commercialization.
